Chisel

What is the Chisel Program?
Chisel is a healthy living program designed to help you take full advantage of what the YMCA has to offer in the new year. This twelve week program will provide each individual guidance on a balanced, healthy lifestyle to prepare you for the warm summer weather. You will learn how to strengthen muscles, burn fat, improve nutrition and properly stretch. The La Porte Y has been here since 1909 to help you achieve a healthy spirit, mind and body.

What Chisel Includes:

  • Confidential evaluation (optional body fat %, measurements, weight and Fitness testing)
  • Three different program designs to fit your personal needs
  • Informational handouts on strength training, stretching, nutrition and cardio
  • Weekly monitoring to keep you on track and motivated
  • Access to pre-formatted USB Drives to aid cardio workouts on cardiovascular machines
  • Free water bottle, USB and t-shirt upon completion of the program
  • The information you need to supplement your membership and help you lead a healthier lifestyle after program completion
  • The opportunity to attend a scheduled presentation provided by a Registered Dietician

Why should I use Chisel?

Chisel has many of the benefits of a personal trainer without the extensive cost.  Although the workouts are not one on one, they are designed by our ACE certified Healthy Living Director, Elizabeth Bowen.  Our trained staff is also available to support you with helpful advice and friendly words of encouragement.  This 12 week program is designed to teach you skills that will last a lifetime. Tabata 

Small Group Tabata Training - High Intensity Interval Training
 
Developed by: Elizabeth Bowen, ACE Certified Personal Trainer

Small Group Tabata Training is for advanced fitness enthusiasts.  Led by Ace Certified Trainer, Elizabeth Bowen, this 6 week training program will help improve cardiovascular and muscular endurance while torching calories.  The 40 minute sessions will take place in the Y community room using our brand new Synergy Tower equipment.

Personal Training

Whether your age 13 or 75, an experienced or beginning exerciser, our certified personal trainers and 3 unique training opportunities will help you reach your health and fitness goals this year. 

Individual Personal training is available for $30 per hour sessions. Packages of five sessions for $125 or 10 sessions for $250 are also available. Your certified trainer will develop a personalized program that is perfect for you and will support you with coaching and motivation to help you live, look and feel better.

Partner Personal Training is also available for a package of 5 sessions for $100. This is a great opportunity to accomplish your health and wellness goals with a friend!

Introducing Small Group Personal Training. This unique training opportunity focuses on getting you results through power in numbers. In 8 weeks, you will strengthen your body through 4 phases of appropriate progression that focus on core stability, correct movement, strength and cardiovascular performance. All fitness levels are welcome. You will receive qualified instruction and pre/post assessment by Cody Satoski, Personal Trainer.  Enrollment open now. ONLY 10 SPOTS ARE AVAILABLE.  (must have at least 4 signed up for program to continue)

Massage Therapy

Pfrimmer Deep Muscle Therapy
A deep tissue massage that helps to relieve chronic pain without using the pressure of most deep tissue massages.

Swedish Massage
A manipulation of soft tissues and superficial muscles using various techniques to aid in the healing process and well-being.

Reflexology
A technique applying pressure to the feet with specific thumb, finger and hand movements.

Ear Candling
A technique used to help relieve ringing in the ears, sinus pain/pressure, swimmer’s ear and itchy ears.

Wellness Classes

(Free to Y members, unless noted otherwise. Offerings and schedules subject to change.)

EXTREME CUT (60 minutes) (Advanced) — An advance version of the classic Powercut class. Come ready to get STRONG! We focus on gaining strength through classic free weight principles. 

BODY SCULPTING (60 minutes) (Intermediate) — Sculpt and tone your body using bands, balls, steps and weights.

30/30 (60 minutes) — A wonderful workout for those that like to mix it up! This combination 30 minute Spin/30 minute cardio strength training class will make you feel great and see results.  

PILATES (60 minutes) (Beginner) — A low impact, total body workout that tones, improves balance and muscle control. Each exercise is designed to open joints and improve breathing. Workout accommodates all levels of fitness. Don’t miss this incredible class!

POWER AEROBICS (60 minutes) (Beginner/Intermediate) — Format includes power walking, low impact aerobics, step and floor work. Each day it changes to keep your body guessing to deliver the maximum workout.

POWER CIRCUIT (60 minutes) (Intermediate) — This dynamic full body workout alternates cardiovascular with muscular endurance stations to offer you the complete package. A variety of gadgets will be incorporated to make every session different, such as resistance bands, steps, free weights, barbells, medicine and balance balls.

POWERCUT (60 minutes) (Intermediate) — This is an innovative way to train using barbells to the latest music. This powerful workout provides total body conditioning.

TOTAL STEP (60 minutes) (Beginner) — Pure step aerobics taught with the beginner in mind. Give this fun cardio class it a try!

SILVER SNEAKERS/SPLASH (60 minutes) — Based upon the idea of "fitness, fun and friends" this class incorporates healthy, social programming with an exercise routine that enhances independent living skills. This low-impact fitness class is held in both the pool and aerobics room.

SPIN (60 minutes) (Intermediate) — Come try the hottest group exercise format in the country!  Indoor group cycling is an exercise class on specifically-designed fixed-gear bicycles. These classes provide fun, camaraderie, sweat and lots of motivation! Our Spinning® certified instructors will guide you through an exciting and challenging workout. Because participants control their own intensity level, group cycling is great for people of any fitness level. Get ready to pedal your way into shape!

YOGA (60 minutes)— Complete your fitness with mind/body work. Hatha Yoga is taught in a non-intimidating way.This class calms, strengthens, improves balance and increases flexibility.

ZUMBA (60 minutes) (Beginner/Intermediate) — This high-energy class is a fusion of Latin and international music that combines unique dance moves to create a dynamic and exciting workout. It is a mixture of body-sculpting movements with easy-to-follow dance steps that  maximizes fat burning and total body toning. Zumba is a “feel-happy” workout that is great for both the body and the mind.

ZUMBA @ Michigan City Convention & Visitors Bureau (4073 Franklin St., Michigan City 46360) (60 minutes) (Beginner/Intermediate) — This high-energy class is a fusion of Latin and international music that combines unique dance moves to create a dynamic and exciting workout. It is a mixture of body-sculpting movements with easy-to-follow dance steps that  maximizes fat burning and total body toning. Zumba is a “feel-happy” workout that is great for both the body and the mind. Mon. & Wed. 5-6 PM open to Y Members & Non-members ($3)


Tae Kwon Do (For Adults & Children, Ages 6 and Up)

This program is run by Black Belts Jerry and Mary Crosslin, who have conducted the YMCA’s martial arts program since 1993. Their outstanding program is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m. (beginners) and 6 p.m. (advanced). Jerry and Mary have instructed the Korean art for over two decades. Jerry owns a 5th-Degree Black Belt and Mary has reached the rank of 3rd-Degree Black Belt. The program honors existing ranks and no contracts are required. The class meets from 5-6 p.m. for beginners or from 6-7 p.m. for advanced.

Seaweed/Tumbleweed

This is a great combination of Skipper swimming lessons followed by a Tumbling class. Each component is a half-hour long. The program, begins in the pool (9:00 - 9:30 a.m.) for games, songs, beginning instructional swim and safety. Then the activities move up to the gym (9:45-10:15 a.m.) for somersaults, animal walks, tunnels, trampolines and scooter boards. F-U-N!
