STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY IS OUR CAUSE
The La Porte County Family YMCA is a leading nonprofit for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. We are a powerful association of men, woman and children of all ages and from all walks of life joined together by a shared passion: to strengthen the foundations of our community.
With a commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. Our Y ensures that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. To do our important work, our Y relies on support from members, donors, volunteers and community leaders.
Our Y believes that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our community. Every day our impact is felt when a mentor inspires a child, when an individual makes a healthy choice and when the community comes together for the common good.
Our Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. Be a part of a cause committed to moving people and communities forward.

Our Child Care & Learning Center is a fully licensed, curriculum-based facility, which has achieved Level 4 Paths to Quality certification and accreditation from National Early Childhood Program Accreditation (NECPA). It is one of only two centers in the county to achieve a Level 4 Paths to Quality. Our caring, loving staff are eager and ready to help your child grow and thrive. Our center serves children from 6 weeks old through kindergarten.
We strive to provide a safe, healthy, nurturing environment for children. Our Y includes a play-based curriculum that nurtures the spirit, mind and body. Our curriculum follows the Indiana foundations for young children and is aligned with kindergarten common core standards. Our staff members provide education in gross and fine motor development skills, values education, character development, along with an opportunity to develop and improve social skills. Parents are able to go to work with peace of mind, confident that their children are safe and learning preschool skills that help them to successfully integrate into kindergarten.
Our building was designed specifically for children, so our facility is second to none in the area. Our children also enjoy a huge outdoor playground and new discovery learning centers in each classroom. Each room has its own restroom and emergency exit. A strict teacher-to-child ratio is maintained at all times in compliance with state regulations. All quality staff are all CPR and First Aid trained. Lead teachers receive their Child Development Associates Certification within the first year of employment. The center serves breakfast, lunch and two snacks a day.
Children learn through play as they explore, manipulate materials, discover relationships and master new skills. Daily activities of art, music, movement and dramatic play enhance creative expression. Social development thrives in a caring environment that promotes a positive self-image and independence. The center’s uses the High Reach Curriculum to direct the daily classroom activities which further the development of each young child. Daily reading and extensive use of language in all classrooms provide the basis for early literacy skills. The goal is to have every child ready for a successful kindergarten experience.
The center is one of a small number of preschools in Indiana that participates in the ISTAR-KR assessment system. ISTAR-KR is a teacher rating process to track a child’s development, identifying developmental delays and to allow for individualization of programs to enhance an individual child’s strengths and weaknesses. Our center is now accepting full-time, part-time and hourly children.
We accept state child care vouchers!
We are pleased to announce that we have received a grant toward our new curriculum from Alcoa-Howmet and that all of our pre-school teachers will be trained in July, 2014 on this new curriculum. We are also pleased to report that we have received grants to improve our kindergarten readiness and literacy ability throughout our county from Alcoa, United Way, Unity Foundation, the City of La Porte and the State of Indiana. Together, we all help to make a difference.
