STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY IS OUR CAUSE

The La Porte County Family YMCA is a leading nonprofit for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. We are a powerful association of men, woman and children of all ages and from all walks of life joined together by a shared passion: to strengthen the foundations of our community.

With a commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. Our Y ensures that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. To do our important work, our Y relies on support from members, donors, volunteers and community leaders.

Our Y believes that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our community. Every day our impact is felt when a mentor inspires a child, when an individual makes a healthy choice and when the community comes together for the common good.

Our Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. Be a part of a cause committed to moving people and communities forward.

FOR HEALTHY LIVING

Improving the nation's health and well-being
Being healthy means more than simply being physically active. It’s about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. The Y is a place where you can work toward that balance by challenging yourself to learn a new skill or hobby, fostering connections with friends through our lifelong learning programs, or bringing your loved ones closer together through our many family-centered activities. At the Y, it’s not about the activity you choose as much as it is about the benefits of living healthier on the inside as well as the outside.

La Porte, Long Beach and Michigan City Elston Branches
Our 8,000 plus members can pursue their health and well-being at any of our three branches, each of which offers cardio and strength equipment and group as well as group exercise opportunities. In La Porte and Michigan City, we also provide swim lessons, water safety training and opportunities for open swim to thousands of kids and adults annually.

Sports and Recreation
We offer a wide range of opportunities for kids and adults to stay healthy while connecting with others. Preschool and youth sports include T-ball, basketball, soccer, track & field, cross country, and cheerleading, Adults can choose from basketball, volleyball, land/water aerobics classes and more.

Enhance®Fitness
This 16-week senior fitness and arthritis management program helps older adults become more active, energized and empowered for independent living. Piloted in 2015, this program has seen great success at the Y.

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA
This 12-week community-based physical activity program is intended to help adults over 18 reclaim their health and well-being following a cancer diagnosis. We have held multiple sessions of this impactful program at the La Porte branch to date.

Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP)
This one-year program uses a CDC-approved curriculum to help adults in the high risk category for diabetes take steps to improve their overall health and well-being. Participation in DPP can reduce the number of new caes of type 2 diabetes by 58% overall, and by 71% in adults over the age of 60. If you have questions about DPP or any of our other chronic disease programs, please contact Healthy Living Director Elizabeth Downs at (219) 325-9622 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
