STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY IS OUR CAUSE

The La Porte County Family YMCA is a leading nonprofit for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. We are a powerful association of men, woman and children of all ages and from all walks of life joined together by a shared passion: to strengthen the foundations of our community.

With a commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. Our Y ensures that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. To do our important work, our Y relies on support from members, donors, volunteers and community leaders.

Our Y believes that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our community. Every day our impact is felt when a mentor inspires a child, when an individual makes a healthy choice and when the community comes together for the common good.

Our Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. Be a part of a cause committed to moving people and communities forward.

Michigan City Elston Branch Pool Update: 2.15.17

Attention Y Members:
This month’s update on our Michigan City Elston Branch pool includes some good news and some bad news.
Work on the pool began in mid-January. Removal of the existing tile went quickly and smoothly. This phase of the project was completed near the end of the month.
Unfortunately, the pool contractor recently discovered that the deep end of the pool will require some additional engineering to ensure long-term structural integrity. In summary, once the contractor removed the tile and inspected the brick, they determined they would need more support beams in the deep end of the pool than they originally planned. This will push the projected end date for the project from late February to late March.
While we are disappointed about this delay, it is important that all potential issues are resolved before we reopen the pool. Our contractor expects to be back on site next Wednesday. They have some cleanup work, then will do brick maintenance and apply a sealant before moving into the beam installation.
We will reopen the pool for aerobics classes, lap swim and open swim as soon as it is filled and chemically balanced. In addition, we will be using our Michigan City Elston Branch as a piloting ground for YMCA of the USA’s brand new swim lesson program. This skills-based program has been tested at Ys throughout the country for two years. We look forward to rolling out this exciting new model along with our new pool.
In the meantime, we encourage all of our members to take advantage of our La Porte pool. We also have some great land-based group exercise classes going on at our Michigan City Elston Branch including Zumba, Pilates + and Drum Fitness.
Thank you again for your patience and understanding regarding this issue. We will continue to provide you with additional updates as we receive them.
